Tsz Ho Wong is a PhD candidate in East Asian Studies and a CDCS Training Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He is particularly interested in the economic, financial, and business history of modern East Asia. His doctoral thesis focuses on the economic and financial mobilisation of the wartime Japanese Empire, including but not limited to the costs of war, such as (hyper-)inflation in Japan’s homeland and its colonies. He is passionate about using digital tools such as Gephi, QGIS, and Google Earth in his research. Outside of his thesis, he is a member of the CARE Global Research Team, based at the CWAR Institute, Wilson Centre.
Before coming to Edinburgh, he completed his BA and MSc at the University of Hong Kong and the London School of Economics and Politics Science. During his undergraduate studies, he focused on Imperial Chinese history and wrote a thesis on the astronomical and astrological manuscript of medieval Dunhuang. While at LSE, he organised a postgraduate conference. Over the past four years, he has presented his research in the UK, continental Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United States on various topics related to Imperial China and modern East Asia.
