Tom Newhall is currently a PhD Student at UCLA in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. He mainly does research on medieval Chinese Buddhist monastic rule books, but has dabbled in “digital methods” for several years. At the Digital Orientalist, he is interested in exploring how computational text analysis can be used to study digitized versions of pre-modern East Asian texts, as well as how markdown and other lightweight text-editing tools can make writing and presenting research easier and more intuitive,  as well how such digital tools can affect the outcomes of humanistic research. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.
