“AI and the Digital Humanities” – Conference Proceedings

This presents the proceedings of the conference AI and The Digital Humanities”, held on 31 May 2025. Around 120 people from all over the world joined.

The conference included three outstanding keynote speeches. The first keynote speaker, Dr Elaine Lai (Stanford University), presented on various ethical issues surrounding the development and use of AI, looking at the different ways in which AI has been adapted for religious and academic purposes. The second keynote speaker, Dr Antonia Karaisl (Waseda University), discussed AI text recognition with a focus on strategies developed for quality control of OCR output. The third keynote speaker, Dr Ephrem A. Ishac (Austrian Academy of Sciences), critically argued that HTR technology promises phenomenal access to the vast textual heritage contained in manuscripts and presented the need to rethink and expand our understanding of the “public.” The conference also featured four panels in which panelists from a variety of backgrounds and locations explored different topics related to the use of AI in Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the conference.

This collection brings together selected papers presented at the conference. Recordings of some presentations will also be made available on our YouTube channel.
