About Leon Woltermann

Leon completed his BA in Southeast Asian Studies and Sinology at the Asia Africa Institute, University of Hamburg. He then graduated with an MA in Digital Humanities from Linnaeus University with a thesis on YouTube comment sections as counterpublics in Indonesia’s digital sphere. Afterwards, he returned to the University of Hamburg to obtain an MA in Southeast Asian Studies. His thesis examined Wikipedia biographies of Indonesian politicians as an alternative form of political Indonesian life writing.

He has contributed to the research project “Buddhist Positioning in the People’s Republic of China,” where he co-developed a biographical database of Chinese Buddhist monks. In addition, he co-led a student research project funded by the Digital and Data Literacy in Teaching Lab at the University of Hamburg which examined cultural influences of popular Malay music using computational methods.

His core interest lies in combining Digital Humanities and Southeast Asian Studies to explore languages, literatures, publics, popular culture, and media, with a particular focus on Indonesia and the Malay World.
