About Xiao Li

Contributor for Chinese Studies

Dr. Xiao Li is a digital humanist and historian who brings technology and the humanities together in innovative ways. She teaches at the University of California, Berkeley, where her courses in archival design, visual analysis, and public humanities introduce students to new tools for exploring the past.

Dr. Li has led major digital projects at institutions such as UC Santa Cruz and Phillips Academy Andover, where she created the Chinese Students at Andover digital archive. At the Smithsonian’s Cultural Rescue Initiative, she used digital methods to help preserve cultural heritage at risk. At Stanford Online High School, she teaches topics such as American Revolution, French Revolution and Haitian Revolution and digital methods for historical research and storytelling. Today, her work focuses on integrating artificial intelligence into research and teaching, expanding the possibilities for how we learn and share knowledge.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Li serves as an editor of H-Asia, part of the H-Net network, where she helps evaluate and support digital projects in Asian studies. She holds a Ph.D. in History from Southern Illinois University and is also a certified Carpentries instructor, teaching Python for data science to scholars and students.
