At The Digital Orientalist, we value diverse voices and perspectives in the field of digital humanities (DH). While we usually invite applications for contributors, editors, and guest contributors, we understand that not everyone can commit to long-term collaboration.
For those who would like to submit a piece without a year-long commitment, we now accept one-off submissions on a rolling basis. You can submit a post if at least one of the following applies:
- You are currently working with a database, or on a project that involves DH, and this may not be true a few months from now, when the call for contributors opens;
- You are interested in writing una tantum, a piece now, and maybe one next year. Therefore, you work better without the publishing calendar and deadlines that apply to those who become DO members;
- You are unsure whether your piece would fit our mission, and want to give it a try.
Submitting a piece does not prevent you from becoming a contributor later on. On the contrary, we may develop collaborations that last longer than a post!
What Are We Looking For?
We publish pieces that engage with DH in many ways. From the way digital tools programs affect our workflow, to user-guides of databases, to new technologies, to reflections on the implications of using DH in our research. You can navigate our website under “topics” to have a sense of what we cover.
As for topics, we are trying to expand our coverage of the following areas: South East Asia; Pacific Islands; Africa; any period for Sinological studies post 500 CE. We are furthermore interested in covering Indian Studies; Islamic Studies; Japanese Studies; Korean Studies; DH theories and practices in general.
Who is the target audience? Potentially, anyone on the internet! Our posts strike a balance between writing for a lay-audience and readers with a more specialized understanding of your chosen topic. You can state at the beginning of the piece how technical it is, to guide the reader.
Submission Guidelines
Submissions can be made anytime via our submission form.
Please consult our Submission Guidelines when preparing your piece. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your submission.
