The Digital Orientalist is pleased to announce its annual open call for contributors and team members for the 2026-2027 academic year.

New to our work? Learn more about The DO here

We seek individuals who work at the intersection of digital humanities and area studies. Our current coverage includes the following areas – with links to recent contributions within each of these teams – though we actively encourage applications that extend beyond them:

  1. African Studies
  2. Central Asian Studies
  3. Chinese Studies
  4. DH Theories and Practices in General
  5. Middle Eastern Studies
  6. Northeast Asian Studies
  7. Persian, Turkic, and Biblical Studies
  8. South Asian Studies
  9. Southeast Asian Studies

We are highly enthusiastic about welcoming applications from new or related fields, such as Oceania or Pacific Island Studies, and GLAM (Librarian Studies, Digital Heritage, Archival Studies).

While we welcome expertise in various regional specialisations, all applications must demonstrate a clear connection to digital humanities methods, tools, or theoretical frameworks.

Available Positions

Positions on our team are open to all, but might be particularly attractive to graduate students and early career researchers looking to:

  • Publish accessible, short-form pieces for a broad, international audience
  • Connect and collaborate with peers in digital humanities and related fields
  • Gain valuable editorial guidance or technical and communications experience

Contributors

We are seeking leading contributors, contributors, and guest contributors who can address digital humanities applications within their field. Please be prepared to pitch brief topic ideas in your application form.

Leading contributors will be expected to contribute 5-6 posts, contributors 3-4 posts, and guest contributors 2 posts annually (September 2026-May 2027). A post is generally between 500 and 1,500 words.

For those interested in submitting a one-off post rather than joining the team, we also accept pieces on a rolling basis, which can be submitted at any time.

Social Media and Web Team Members

We are also seeking candidates to help run and develop our online presence. Please indicate your preferred role and interests in the application form:

  1. Social media managers: developing content for our BSky, Facebook, Instagram, and  LinkedIn accounts
  2. Newsletter editor: curating and writing our monthly newsletters
  3. Website designers: updating and improving our website

Application Process

Submit your CV and application via this google form. The application deadline is July 19th, 2026. Interviews will be scheduled remotely after the deadline.

Please send any questions to digitalorientalist@gmail.com.

Please note: The DO runs entirely on a voluntary basis. We are not able to provide any salary for any of the positions listed above.
